Tourism Highlights Print

Just like the whole country also the tourism sector in Sierra Leone is slowly recovering from the civil war. Before the war about 30,000 French tourists visited the country every year, besides those from all the other countries. The tourism infrastructure in Sierra Leone is basic with the only western-standard hotels in Freetown and Makeni. However, Sierra Leone is becoming more known throughout the world and the recently published Bradt Travel Guide (the only one every that focusses solely on Sierra Leone) will boost the tourism sector even more.

Sierra Leone is undoubtly the beach paradise in Africa and can easily compete with islands in Oceania or the Caribbean.

Highlights for the somewhatadventure oriented tourists are:

  • The endless and deserted white beaches along the Peninsula (River No. 2 Beach and many more)

  • Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

  • Outamba-Kilimi National Park

  • Banana and Turtle Islands
  • Tiwai Island National park with the largest monkey and ape density in the world

  • Gola Forest with its wildlife (Elephants, Lions) and some of the last pygmy hippos in the world

  • Freetown with its colonials sights and markets

  • Bunce Island, the Fortress of the Slaves
