Negara Brunei Darussalam, in short Brunei, opened its doors to tourism only a few years ago. Some nationalities can enter Brunei now without any visa, which makes travelling to Brunei even easier. Nowadays Brunei is a classical stop-over destination on the way from Europe or central Asia to Australia and New Zealand. Brunei has a lot to offer for more than a day or two. The combination of modernism, Muslim tradition and monarchy is special and a unique experience. Istana Nurul Iman The top highlight for tourists is undoubtedly the "Open House" at Istana Nurul Iman, the home of the Sultan. At the end of Ramadan each year (around beginning of October) the Sultan opens the doors of his palace to the public. Everyone can enjoy within a three day period free food and drinks while queuing to shake the hand of the sultan (for women to shake the hand of the sultan's wifes). By the way, Istana Nurul Iman is the largest palace in the world. It contains nearly 1,800 rooms, 260 bathrooms spread over more than 200,000 sqm. Amenities include 5 swimming pools, and an air conditioned stable for the Sultan's 200 polo ponies, a 110-car garage, a banquet hall that can be expanded to accommodate up to 4,000 guests, and a mosque accommodating 1,500 people. Istana Nurul Iman is a reflection of the whole country, combining modernism with Muslim traditions. Other sights in Bandar Seri Begawan worth a visit are: Mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah Royal Regalia Museum Brunei Museum Brunei History Centre House of Twelve Roofs Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque Kampung Ayer, the traditional water city
Outside of the capital BSB one can get a close insight into the most intact tropical rainforest in Asia (Ulu-Temburong National Park), the oil capital Belait as well as do sports like Golf, go swimming in the sea or enjoy Jerudong, the entertainment area of Brunei including a Bruneian "Disney Land". Shopping in one of the large malls is also something interesting to experience, especially in combination with the outside local and traditional markets.
